Water Pump Stations for Home Irrigation

Terry Brady - Sunday, April 29, 2012

Water pump stations are being used by more homeowners for their lawn irrigation.

If you are planning an irrigation system for your home lawn and garden and you have access to a pond, lake or stream, you may want to consider having a water pump station installed. If you have a viable water source on your property, small, pre-packaged pump stations designed for residential use are readily available.

These scaled-down pump stations can supply water to your irrigation system for pennies on the dollar compared to buying water from your local water purveyor. In addition to being more cost effective, they are also more eco-friendly because you are not using water that has had to go through the treatment process.

Contact a professional irrigation specialist to determine the best system for your particular needs. There are many factors that need to be taken into consideration including local permitting and code requirements.

Drip Irrigation Products can Help You Become More Water Efficient

Terry Brady - Sunday, April 15, 2012

Drip irrigation products mean no more lugging hoses all over your yard.

If you’re tired of dragging a heavy sprinkler hose from one area of your lawn to another day after day, it may be time to consider installing an irrigation system. With our natural resources being depleted at alarming levels, you may want to consider becoming more water efficient and using a watering system that conserves water.

Conventional lawn sprinkler systems can be inefficient and waste water. The performance and efficiency of lawn sprinkler systems can be greatly improved by the use of “smart controllers”. Smart controllers utilize a weather station to monitor conditions and adjust the system run-time as needed. Systems with smart controller can reduce their water usage by 30-50%.

When it comes to the landscape, drip irrigation is the way to go. Drip irrigation applies water near the root zone at a slow rate which results in less runoff and less evaporation. Drip irrigation is ideal for foundation plantings around your home. The lower application rate prevents problems resulting from too much water around the foundation, such as wet crawl spaces, damp basements, and termites.

How to Install Garden Drip Systems This Spring for Healthy and Vibrant Plants

Flip Law - Wednesday, April 11, 2012

Garden drip systems installed in your home garden can save you time and money.

installing garden drip systemInstalling a garden drip system for your home garden is an excellent way to provide the water needed for healthy and vibrant plants this spring. Drip systems feed the water directly to the root system to provide the most effective watering. Here is a quick guide on how to install your system.

  • Determine your garden layout by counting the number of rows and measuring the length of each row. There are several pre-assembled kits available, knowing the size of your garden will help you select the right one.

  • Lay the drip tubing (or drip tape) down each row alongside the plants. This line is called the lateral and it connects to another tube that is perpendicular to the rows. This perpendicular line is called the header.

  • A pressure regulator and wye filter are connected to the header. These devices control the pressure and remove small particles and debris that can clog the small drip emitter orifices.

  • Once everything is installed you can connect the header to a garden hose and you are ready to go.

  • Garden drip systems can be made even more efficient by installing a garden hose timer and fertilizer injection system.

A drip system can save you precious time and help you conserve water. Before you install your system, check with the professionals at W.P. Law, Inc. for complete details about which irrigation system is best for your garden. You may decide you’d rather leave installation to the pros – and we can help with that, too.

Automatic Plant Water System - Is This the Best Way to Water Your Garden?

Terry Brady - Sunday, April 08, 2012

An automatic plant water system can save you valuable time and money by doing the watering for you.

automatic watering systemIt’s springtime and like most homeowners you may be busy planning your garden and landscaping for the upcoming season. Don’t forget about the irrigation systems. A happy and healthy garden needs water, and with the crazy weather patterns we have been experiencing, you can’t always rely on nature to do the watering for you.

To make your watering easier, consider installing an automatic plant water system. Here are a few reasons an automatic system is the way to go:

Drip Irrigation - Is This the Best Choice for You?

Terry Brady - Sunday, April 01, 2012

Drip irrigation is the perfect irrigation method to help you conserve water and direct the water where it is needed.

best drip irrigation choiceIf you have a garden and are wondering what is the best irrigation method to use, consider drip irrigation. Using the right irrigation system for your specific needs will help you conserve water, save money and get the water exactly where it is needed, the root zone.

It seems that year after year we are under strict water restrictions because of drought conditions. To do your part in water conservation, use the irrigation system that can help you conserve water and give your garden the water it needs where it is needed most.

Traditional sprinkler systems are much less efficient because a lot of the water is lost due to evaporation and runoff. Wind also affects traditional sprinkler systems by blowing the water where it isn’t needed leaving some areas without the appropriate amount of water. Delivering the water directly to the root zone is the most efficient way to water.

To find out whether a drip irrigation system is the best choice for your irrigation needs, let the experts at W.P. Law, Inc. advise you on what will work best.

A Drip Irrigation System: How does it work?

Flip Law - Monday, March 26, 2012

Using a drip irrigation system for irrigating gardens and flower beds ensures the water goes where it is needed.

drip irrigation systemAs you are planning your spring planting don’t forget to plan for an irrigation system. There are several different types of irrigation systems that work well but for now let’s focus on the drip irrigation system and how it works.

The drip irrigation system delivers the water directly to the base of the flowers and plants. The water is slowly dripped at the base of the foliage which allows for the plants to slowly take in the needed water.

Drip irrigation systems work great for farms and small gardens, but are also great for using in flower beds and under trees and shrubs. Drip irrigation can also be used in hanging baskets and container gardens as well.

Drip irrigation systems are very ecofriendly because the water is dripped exactly where it is needed, less water is used. Additionally, by keeping the excessive water off of the plants it helps to prevent the invasion of many different pests and disease that can cause damage to the plants.

Your Lawn Sprinkler System - 4 Pumps to Choose From

Flip Law - Thursday, March 15, 2012

When you’re creating your lawn sprinkler system, choosing the right pump makes a big difference.

lawn sprinkler systemHomeowners, who have a well or have access to surface water such as lakes, ponds, or streams, can save money by using a pump to supply their lawn sprinkler system. In some cases a permit must be obtained before accessing a public water source, these permits are usually easy to obtain and are in most cases relatively inexpensive. The cost savings realized with using a pump system compared to the cost of using a municipal water source can be significant. These cost savings easily offset the initial investment of the pump, usually providing a payback of 1-2 years.

When selecting a pump, it is best to consult with an irrigation professional. There are several pump options to choose from depending on your water source. Here are four to consider.
  • Centrifugal Pumps: A centrifugal pump is the most commonly used sprinkler irrigation pump. Centrifugal pumps are typically used to pump out of lakes, ponds, or streams. They are usually placed on shore and a suction pipe is run from the pump out into the water source. Centrifugal pumps must be primed (pump casing and suction line must be filled with water) before using.
  • Submersible Pump: A submersible pump is placed into the water source. Submersible pumps are usually used in wells but can be placed in ponds and lakes (check local electrical codes before doing this) if a water induction sleeve is used. Submersible pumps do not need to be primed since the pump intake is submerged in the water.
  • Self-Priming Centrifugal Pump: A self-priming centrifugal pump works the same as a standard centrifugal pump. The pump casing is larger and is designed to act as a tank to keep the pump impeller submerged. Despite what the name implies, the pump casing on self-priming pumps does need initial priming.
  • Booster Pump: A booster pump is usually a centrifugal pump that is installed in a municipal water line. Booster pumps are used when the water pressure is very low to increase the pressure.

Garden Drip Irrigation Systems - Top 3 benefits you’ll enjoy

Flip Law - Thursday, March 01, 2012

Garden drip systems will help keep your garden green while conserving water.

garden drip irrigation systemWith spring just around the corner it’s time to start planning for your home garden. During the planning stage, be sure to plan for an appropriate watering system. Garden drip systems are an excellent choice and have several benefits, here are the top three.
  • 1) Conserves Water: Because a garden drip system slowly drips water directly on to the root zone of the plant, it reduces the amount of water that is needed. This will help to create a healthier plant. By going directly to the root, the water isn’t as exposed to the elements therefore evaporation is limited.

  • 2) Keeps Plants Healthier: Garden drip systems can help keep plants healthier and reduce the possibility of disease. Many plants are prone to disease caused by too much moisture. Because the water is directed toward the root, the moisture stays off of the plant.

  • 3) Saves Money & Time: Because less water is used, you will save money on your water bill. By placing the system on a timer, you won’t have to take time out of your busy schedule to water. Additionally garden drip systems are ideally suited for injecting water soluble fertilizers.
