4 Drip Line Irrigation Mistakes You Don't Know You're Making

WP Law - Monday, May 06, 2013

When using drip line irrigation, your results depend on doing it right.

4 Drip Line Irrigation Mistakes You Don't Know You're Making

Let’s take a look at number of reasons why drip line irrigation can be ineffective because of user error.

• Too few emitters: The key point of drip irrigation is to ensure that the root zone of the plant is adequately watered. A common mistake is to use fewer emitters than what is necessary to efficiently water the plant. When you have large plants it is important to make sure that you have enough emitters.

You should also avoid a situation where a large plant (tree) is depending on a single emitter for its water supply. If for some reason the emitter becomes clogged or otherwise dysfunctional, the plant will die. It is a good practice to water all plants from at least two sources.

• Poor placement: Another common error is placing the emitters too close to or too far from the plant. The emitters should be evenly spaced and kept at least six inches from the base of the plant.

• Subpar filtration: Not using a filter or using the wrong drip system filter is another common mistake. A 155 mesh to 200 mesh filter should be used.

• Incorrect Pressure: In order for a drip irrigation system to work properly the right water pressure is essential. Most pressure compensating emitters can operate at a range of 20-50 PSI, but typically work best at 30 PSI. An excessive number of emitters, an extremely long run of drip tubing, or a combination of both can cause the pressure in the line to drop below what is needed to allow the emitters to function properly.

If you give attention to these areas of concern you should see much better results.

Why Are So Many Churches Installing Commercial Fountains?

WP Law - Monday, April 08, 2013

There is a great connection between churches and commercial fountains that are seen on those buildings.

why are so many churches installing commercial fountains

The Bible is full of illustrations using things that can be seen to explain things that cannot be seen – and the presence of commercial fountains on many church campuses is an object lesson as well as a beautification element.

From the book of Genesis to the last book of Revelation, water is mentioned over 700 times. Jesus referred to Himself as Living Water and invited all to drink freely; a church is going to be a perfect place then, for a water feature.

An indoor waterfall in the foyer can be a visual reminder of the streams of Living Water promised to the believer. The congregation can look at a chosen verse incorporated into the design and immediately get the connection. A fountain outside the building can proclaim Jesus' invitation to come and partake of the spiritual offerings inside.

The problem with this idea is the creating of the water feature; plumbing, humidity levels, building codes, design, permits, electricity standards are only a few of the issues involved. This is not a job for a do-it-yourselfer, particularly in a building open to the public on a regular basis.

The professionals at W.P. Law, Incorporated have over 15 years of experience in designing commercial fountains, as well as constructing, maintaining, and repairing water features in a variety of locations. Our team can work with you to come up with the ideal water feature for your church. Contact us today.

3 Types of Residential Fountains You Could Use at Your Business

WP Law - Monday, April 01, 2013

A great idea for beautifying your place of business... residential fountains can add a touch of elegance even at work.

3 types of residential fountains

Did you know you can easily add a water feature to your business property? Many types of residential fountains can be installed in a commercial or business setting. It might even entice your customers to come in more often.

We all enjoy walking by a lake or looking out at a waterfall and perhaps tossing coins in a fountain for good luck. Residential fountains are easy to add to a courtyard for your employees to enjoy lunch hour or you’re landscaping making your building attractive to the public. Here are three common types of fountains used in homes that can also be useful at your business.

Water gardens and waterfalls can be as simple as a preformed pool with rocks around it and some plants with a few fish. They can also be elaborate mini-worlds with waterfalls and paths going over koi ponds.

Floating fountains can add a spray feature to a pond, aerating to improve water quality and adding the soothing sound of water falling into the pool as you watch the rainbows in the mist.

Architectural fountains are a broad category of water feature. Each fountain is composed of a pump, pipes, and possibly sprayer moving water across whatever you decide you want as your focus. You are limited by your imagination, your budget, and physics.

How do you decide? W. P. Law Inc. carries everything you need to bring your ideas to life and has the expert advice available to guide you in the process – just ask for a free consultation today.

2 Tips for Protecting Irrigation Sprinkler Heads at Sports Facilities

Flip Law - Thursday, March 28, 2013

protecting irrigation sprinklers

Prevention is paramount – how to keep your irrigation sprinkler heads from getting tackled.

Keeping your landscape irrigation sprinkler heads intact and functioning properly is one of the keys to having a great field for any game. There is nothing good about playing on a field where the grass is having challenges because it isn’t getting watered property. One of the main causes of a failing field can be associated with the unfortunate fact that irrigation sprinkler heads can be destroyed.

One of the key elements to making sure that your field is protected is proper planning. Make sure your irrigation sprinkler heads have a fighting chance on your field.

Install at the proper depth.
Make sure that irrigation sprinkler heads are installed at the proper depth per the manufacturer’s instructions. By installing sprinkler heads at the proper depth you not only protect the sprinklers from being damaged by mowing equipment you also help protect athletes from potential injury.

Adjust when necessary.
Check the installation depth of sprinklers every few years. Top dressing and other soil amendments build up over time causing the sprinkler installation depth to increase over time. Sprinklers that are installed too deep can develop problems over time such as leaking around the riser stem and non-rotation.

When Should I Aerate My Lawn?

Steve Richardson - Monday, March 04, 2013

lawn aerate

Aeration helps provide a healthy lush lawn.

Grasses fall into two different categories: warm-season and cool-season. Warm-season grasses start active growth in summer. Aerate a warm-season lawn in late spring to early summer, During this time the rapid growth will quickly fill in the holes you create.

Cool-season turf comes out of dormancy in early fall and grows vigorously during the lower temperature. Just remember to plan your aeration to allow four weeks of growing time prior to frost.

Warm-season turf types – aerate these in the spring or early summer:

• Bahia grass
• Bermuda grass
• Centipede grass
• St. Augustine grass
• Zoysia grass

Cool-season turf types – aerate in fall:

• Creeping bent grass
• Fescue
• Kentucky bluegrass
• Rough bluegrass
• Rye grass (annual, perennial)

How to aerate in different soil types

Clay soil is compacted easily and should be aerated at least once a year. You can aerate a sandy lawn once a year, or on alternate years. In dry climates, aerating twice a year will enhance turf growth and health. If your lawn is used for parking cars, or have a lot of foot traffic you should aerate annually.

• Aerate just prior to fertilizing or reseeding your lawn. Doing this creates openings for nutrients and seed to enter soil.
• Weeds should be controlled prior to aerating, because aerating can spread weed seeds and weed roots.
• Wait at least a year to aerate new lawn, so that grass is well established.
• Aerate when soil is moist, but not saturated.
• Avoid aerating during drought or high heat. If you aerate in these conditions, you’ll stress the lawn by allowing heat to dry soil.

Landscape Irrigation Maintenance

Flip Law - Thursday, February 28, 2013

An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure

Landscape irrigation can be a true blessing for any home or business owner, especially during the hot dry months of summer. A little bit of maintenance can go a long way in keeping your system up and running when it’s needed the most.

The following are a few irrigation maintenance tips.

Clean the filters and screens:
Most drip irrigation systems have a wye-type screen filter to keep debris from clogging emitters and spray stakes. The screen is removable and needs to be cleaned periodically. Also most pop-up sprinklers and spray heads have an intake screen located at the base of the head or just under the nozzle. If you notice a weakened spray pattern, a partially clogged screen may be the culprit.

Check for damaged sprinklers:
Sprinklers can become damaged from mowing and aerating equipment. Broken sprinklers no only waste water, but they can cause other sprinklers to perform poorly due to the lower water pressure.

Leaky valves:
Valves can begin to leak over time. This is usually due to worn or distorted diaphragms. These parts can easily be replaced. Spring is a good time to make these repairs before the hot dry weather sets in.

The irrigation experts at W.P. Law, Inc. are knowledgeable in a variety of issues that can arise. Visit our professionals who can assist you with any number of problems you may have with your own landscape irrigation.

Smart Irrigation Systems

Flip Law - Thursday, February 21, 2013

smart irrigation systems

Technology meets irrigation systems

When it comes to having a beautiful and well cared for landscaping one of the key components is having adequate water. Irrigation controllers have been around for decades and have allowed us to automate the mundane task of turning irrigation systems on and off. Irrigation controllers typically allow the operator the options of selecting the day and time that an irrigation cycle will start, what zone(s) will run and for how long. In many cases the irrigation run time is an educated guess. While irrigation run times can be calculated to apply a given amount of water over a given area, these calculations do not factor in the weather conditions on a given day.

Behold the “smart” irrigation controller. Smart controllers utilize an on-site weather station to adjust irrigation run times on an as needed basis. Smart controllers also take into account the soil type, plant material, and historical climate data. Because smart controllers can “think” they can make irrigation run-time adjustments. They will allow the irrigation system to run more frequently during dry periods and less frequently on cloudy or rainy days.

Smart controllers not only provide a more healthy landscape they also help conserve our most precious natural resource.
